About the Event

Many of us are moved by the dispute over land at the site of Ihumaatao in Mangere - particularly because the unjust confiscation of this land from Māori in 1863 has been such a devastating and pre-determining factor. There is a collision of world views at hand and it is at such times as this, that skills of peace - such as deep listening, with-holding judgement, and a commitment to truth and to justice are so important. As a new organisation, the Aaiotanga Peace Place Trust is facilitating this opportunity in collaboration with Pax Christi so that anyone that is interested in finding out more about this dispute and seeking to support just outcomes, might be able to engage with it as a community of interest.

We are very aware that we are pre-dominantly Pākeha/Tauiwi organisations and it is only at the open invitation of the SOUL (Save Our Unique Landscape) occupiers that we are venturing into this situation in the first place. We suspect that there is an authentic role for us to play as concerned citizens of this country, to seek and ask for justice by means of peaceful resolution.
